Life is the bubbles at Disney’s Castaway Cay

I may have started swimming just a few short years ago, but my love of Disney has been lifelong. I related to Moana at first sight, years before I hit the water: an ambitious brown girl warrior ready to take on the seas at every challenge and discover every treasure. While Moana was on her quest to restore the heart of Te Fiti, this new swimmer had one thing in mind: finally diving deep to see Disney’s treasures firsthand!

Last summer, I boarded my first Disney Cruise Line voyage — The Disney Wish — which sets sail in Cape Canaveral and takes a soothing journey to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in The Bahamas. If you’ve followed some of my water journey, you’ll know that The Bahamas has a special place in my heart. My great-grandmother took her voyage from Eleuthera, a long pencil-thin Bahamian island (where famous Bahamian Lenny Kravitz currently lives), to Ellis Island in New York City in the late 1920s. I’ve always had such a love for The Bahamas mainly because of my family history, but also its beauty. As Moana found her inspiration from her beloved grandmother in the ocean, I can hear the calming yet roaring spirit of Cecelia Florrie Thompson in Bahamian waters, who, as just a teenager, left her island hoping to become a teacher in Harlem.
